GHG Project Evaluations
GHG reduction strategies are a program of works that take place over a period of years. During this time, technologies change, things wear out, regulations and legislation change and environmental markets fluctuate.
Having developed a carbon footprint of an organization, low hanging fruit can normally be readily established. Challenges come when this initial list has been exhausted and/or it is necessary to develop a plan with targets and budgets over the next 3/5/10+ years. To progress, it will be necessary to perform further analysis such as:
- Energy Audits – A carbon footprint may only tell you that the annual energy consumption is so many MWh. To understand where these go and what can be done typically requires an energy audit. Axiom Methods work with Energy Auditors to take their findings, evaluate recommendations and assess potential Monetization benefits so that projects can be ranked by increasing marginal cost of abatement.
- Potential Offset Projects – Offset projects can potentially cover many technologies, may face a potentially limited monetization life due to regulation changes and are subject to carbon volatility. Axiom Methods can help you navigate this and evaluate all risks including technology, regulation, market, legislation, and counter party. For many organizations, offset projects can provide the cheapest forms of GHG reductions if managed correctly.
- Location of Project – For many organizations, where there are operations in different states or different countries, identical projects can make economic sense in some jurisdictions, not in others due to local variations in monetization benefits.
- It makes no sense now – but maybe in a few years.
Axiom Methods has assisted many organizations bring clarity into this process.
